Quiet Understanding

Sep 28, 2026

Passing a struggling colleague in the hallway usually forces a bad choice: ignore them, or rush in to “fix” how they feel. Traditional work culture taught us that emotion is something to hide or manage.

But doing less often works far better. It mirrors the Taoist concept of wei wu wei (“doing without doing”). It’s not about coasting—it’s about equanimity. Seeing a situation clearly, doing just enough, and giving a hard feeling room to run its course without rushing to manage it.

In Human Mode, this is called quiet understanding.

This week, when a teammate seems off, try a small hallway gesture afterward. Don’t walk past, and don’t offer a fix. A nod, a question, or a quiet word is enough to tell them that being human is allowed at work.
