Think about the last great team you were on. You don’t remember the deliverable. You remember the people.

In 2025, the American Psychological Association asked thousands of Americans where they find meaning. 92 percent named the same thing: relationships. That’s the thread under everything. So here’s what I think we miss about work: when work feels meaningful, it’s usually not the tasks. It’s the people we do them with.

And this isn’t just an American story. When Pew asked nearly 19,000 people across 17 countries the same question in 2021, connection to others was the one thread running under every culture’s answer.

Then 2025 tells the other half of the story. Nearly 40 percent of US workers say they feel lonely on the job. A 2025 Gallup study found only 18 percent feel real purpose in their work.

We polish the tasks and starve the connection.

The meaning gap is a connection gap.

That’s the part no tool can do for you. That’s Human Mode.
